The public schools in Ferguson, Missouri will remain closed until at least August 25 due to the unrest in the community and out of concern for the safety of students. The delayed opening of the school year has resulted in many children going without adequate food. Students who receive free or reduced school lunch sometimes rely on that lunch as their only or most substantial, nutritious meal of the day. According to the US Department of Agriculture, when school is out of session 90% of students lose their access to that meal, which creates food insecurity.
